WESTPORT — It was a grand day for play, even though chilly temperatures Saturday didn’t fully cooperate with the “Kickoff to Summer” theme set for a seasonal celebration at Compo Beach hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department.

Kicking off the “Kickoff” was the reopening of the rebuilt Compo playground, a community-driven initiative to provide a safer, more resilient and more inclusive playscape for youngsters. Construction of the playground, carried out by community volunteers during a week in April, was the culmination of more than a year’s worth of planning, fundraising and coordination by the Compo Beach Playground Committee.

Other activities that welcomed the coming sunny days of summer included a chance to “Touch-a-Truck,” or two, brought to the beach by the town’s public safety and DPW crews, obstacle courses, face-painting and a range of treats available from food trucks.

Archery range, sponsored by Cub Scout Pack 39, where range master Ed Gratrix introduced the skill to youngsters, including Miles Beau Marty, a first-grader at Kings Highway Elementary School.
