WESTPORT — Day-long rainfall, punctuated by periodic downpours, put Westport at risk of flooding Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Under a “Flood Watch” posted through 5 p.m. Tuesday, the weather service warns, “Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

“Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.”

Runoff may be particularly substantial since the region’s weeks-long drought has hardened the ground and limited its ability to absorb precipitation.

Rainfall by evening may total as much as two inches, the NWS predicts, before tapering off overnight.

However, there remains a 50 percent chance of rain Wednesday until skies clear Thursday.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the low-70s, under cloud-covered skies, throughout Tuesday.
