WESTPORT — Pumpkins past their prime, gourds no longer gorgeous.
Tote that decomposing Halloween decor to the “Great Pumpkin Toss” on Nov. 3 at the Westport Farmers Market.
Collection of pumpkins and gourds for composting will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at the market, 50 Imperial Ave.
Pumpkins and gourds in their natural state — those that are painted or decorated are not compostable — can literally be tossed into a collection bin, or just dropped off, at the free composting program managed by Action Waste Solutions.
“Each year, 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins in the U.S. are wasted,” Nicola LaRiccia, co-founder of Action Waste Solutions, said in a publicity release. “This is a great way to reduce that waste by turning it into usable compost.”
Pumpkins also will be collected by Stephanie Maynard from Ox Hollow Farm to be fed to cows.
“Throughout the year we support the efforts of composting to recycle and reuse food that would otherwise be trashed,” Lori Cochran-Dougall, executive director of the Westport Farmers Market, said in the release.
“Last year we diverted one ton of pumpkin waste from the landfill through the Great Pumpkin Toss,” she added.
