WESTPORT — Special Olympics athletes, joined by Westport police officers, will carry the “Flame of Hope” through town at midday Friday, and officials warn that traffic along the Post Road corridor will be affected.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run, a three-day event originating from several points in the state, converges at the start of the Special Olympics summer games, which this year will be staged June 1-2 at several venues in the New Haven area.

The local leg of the Torch Run is expected to start about noon Friday, May 31, when Norwalk police officers hand over the torch to Westport officers at the border on Post Road West. Officers and Special Olympics athletes will carry the torch through downtown along Post Road East to the town’s border with Fairfield, where the torch will be passed to that town’s officers en route through other communities until it reaches the site of the summer games.

Drivers are advised to expect delays along the local stretch of the Post Road, as well as streets feeding into the corridor, while the Torch Run proceeds through town.
