WESTPORT — Hometown pride hit its stride Monday — a proud salute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

The town’s Memorial Day parade stepped off under clear morning skies, showcasing the annual tribute to the men and women whose personal sacrifices helped to ensure American freedoms.

The parade — pictured in the accompanying gallery — followed the traditional line of march, starting along the Saugatuck River’s west bank, crossing over to downtown and winding up after passing by Town Hall. A memorial ceremony was to follow on Veterans Green.

The events underscored what Abraham Lincoln said 160 years ago in his Gettysburg address: “… that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
