WESTPORT — A beacon of light. A beacon of hope.
For more than three centuries, the steeple of Green’s Farms Church has been a Westport icon, from its earliest days helping sailors navigate toward shore to summoning the faithful to worship.
And now that beacon stands tall above a newly renovated sanctuary, where the congregation plans to mark its 311th anniversary Sunday, June 12, with a celebration open to the community.
Events planned for the celebration will commence with a 9:30 a.m. ribbon cutting led by First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, followed by services at 10 o’clock featuring music performed on the restored Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ.
At 11 a.m., a festival is planned on church grounds with food, games, ice cream and cake.
Tours of the renovated house of worship and other facilities at 71 Hillandale Road also will be offered.
“Green’s Farms Church has been at the heart of the Westport community since its founding members first gathered on June 12, 1711,” the Rev. Jeff Rider, the church’s senior minister, said in a statement publicizing the event.
“During the months of the pandemic lockdown when we had to move services online, our members took the opportunity to undertake an extensive restoration project,” Rider said.
“We wanted to preserve the beauty of our iconic New England church, while modernizing so it can provide for the needs of our congregation and our community for generations to come.”
The renovations include a kindergarten class added to the church’s non-denominational nursery school, new audio-visual systems and flexible meeting spaces for church and community groups.
