WESTPORT — Thousands of motorcyclists rolled through town Sunday during the annual “United Ride” tribute to victims of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The participants gathered at Sherwood Island State Park to begin the ride, which went onto Interstate 95 south to Exit 17 at Saugatuck Avenue, before heading north through town on Route 33. The rest of the 60-mile route passed through Wilton, Redding, Bethel, Newtown, Monroe, Trumbull and Fairfield before ending at Seaside Park in Bridgeport.

It was the 21st year for the traveling tribute. Organizers say it is the state’s largest 9/11 commemoration.

Money raised by registration fees are donated to emergency relief funds for families of police officers and firefighters in the state and to two local United Ways, according to organizers.
