This logo for the Compo Beach playground renovation project was drawn by Jack Burke, a Greens Farms Elementary School fifth grader, whose entry was selected as the winner in a contest for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. “To me, being at the Compo Beach playground means simple summer fun and playing with my family and friends I have known since I was a baby,” Jack wrote in submitting his illustration.

WESTPORT — Renovations to the Compo Beach playground may be planned on the sandy waterfront, but the volunteer-led project is relying on rock-solid community support to finance and build the facilities.

In a recent update, the Compo Beach Playground Committee — which won zoning approval for the project in May — reported that it has raised more than half of the $650,000 budget set for the renovations.

The group plans to carry out the work, powered by a cadre of volunteers, the week of April 21-26, 2025, according to the update.

Detailed information about the committee’s fundraising campaign, as well as how to donate, signing up to volunteer and sponsorship opportunities are posted on the group’s website.

The Westport Rotary Club is helping lead the efforts as a gift to the community as it marks the club’s 100th anniversary. Other anchor partners are the Westport Police Foundation and the Westport Young Woman’s League.

The latest initiative to renovate the playground — built in 1988 and refurbished in 2006, likewise organized by community volunteers — will focus on modernizing equipment, improving sight lines for parents and caregivers monitoring their children, enhancing accessibility for all children and enhancing the facilities’ long-term maintenance.
