NEW HAVEN – An energetic and rhythmic evening of music is being presented by the New Haven Symphony Orchestra next week.
Feel the Beat will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, at the John C. Lyman Center for the Performing Arts at the Southern Connecticut State University. The concert will include “an electrifying mix of West African drumming, orchestral fireworks, and drumline grooves,” and “celebrates the universal heartbeat that connects music across cultures.”
The concert’s program includes:
- Derrick Skye’s Between Suns, a West African drum concerto featuring drum soloists Brian Jarawa Gray and Michael Mills
- George Gershwin’s An American in Paris, a “jazz-infused journey through the streets of the City of Light”
- Silvestre Revuelta’s La noche de los Mayas, a Latin percussion piece featuring guest performers from the SCSU Percussion Ensemble
- A performance by SCSU’s Blue Steel Drumline
The concert is being led by Music Director Perry So and is sponsored by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Southern Connecticut State University, Frontier, and the New Haven Register. Tickets range in price from $15 to $49, and are $10 for students and free for active military and their immediate family. Tickets can be purchased here.
