WESTPORT — A concert of music popularized by “Broadway’s Bad Boys,” and a play-reading that explores issues of creation vs. evolution are the next presentations slated by the Westport Country Playhouse.
The concert, showcasing songs associated with “musical theater’s iconic villains,” will be performed five times Jan. 23-26 at the playhouse, 25 Powers Court.

“Broadway’s Bad Boys,” part of a new “Broadway Scores at the Playhouse” series slated by the theater, will feature songs made famous by characters such as the Phantom from “The Phantom of the Opera,” Fiyero from “Wicked,” the Beast from “Beauty and the Beast” and Harold Hill from “The Music Man,” according to publicity for the show.
Composers whose work is represented include George Gershwin, from his score for “An American in Paris,” Eric Idle (“Spamalot”), Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton”), Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked”), Marc Shaiman (“Catch Me If You Can”) and Stephen Sondheim (“Into the Woods”), among many others.
Concert performers will include Broadway veterans who have appeared in, respectively, “Wicked,” “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” and “Hamilton” — Sam Gravitte, Kevin Massey and Julius Thomas III.
“How the World Began” play-reading
A staged reading of the drama, “How the World Began,” will be presented Jan. 13 at the playhouse.
The production, part of the theater’s “Script in Hand” series, will take place at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13.

The play, written by Catherine Trieschmann, “examines the clash between science and religion in a small Kansas town torn apart by a recent tornado,” according to playhouse publicity for the presentation.
The cast includes Colin Konstanty, a Staples High School graduate, and Alexandra Kopko, Bill Phillips and Faith Sandberg.
