WESTPORT — The legacy of Lawrence Langner, playwright/theater producer and co-founder of the Westport Country Playhouse, will be honored with dedication of a “Literary Landmark” from the Theatre Guild on May 27.
The event, open to the public, will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday. May 27, at the playhouse, 25 Powers Court. To reserve a seat, at no charge, email evelangner@att.net.
The guild’s Literary Landmark pays tribute to writers and “encourages the dedication of historic literary sites,” according to a statement from program organizers. It is affiliated with United for Libraries and the American Library Association.
The program will include discussion of “Memories of the American Theater,” chronicling the history of the Westport Country Playhouse. The book’s author, Richard Somerset-Ward, will be interviewed by film historian Foster Hirsch.
The playhouse was founded in 1931 by Langner and his wife, Armina Marshall.
In addition to the playhouse, Langner founded the Theatre Guild, which produced “Oklahoma!” and “Porgy and Bess,” among many other plays and musicals. He also helped to establish the American Shakespeare Festival Theater, the American Repertory Company and the “U.S. Steel Hour.”
Langner also was the author of several plays and books, including his autobiography, “The Magic Curtain,” recounting his life in the theater as well as his other career as a patent attorney.
