WESTPORT — Two free programs providing behind-the-scenes insights into the current production and the facilities at the Westport Country Playhouse are planned in coming weeks.
On July 16, Jeffrey Hatcher, a stage and screen writer whose adaptation of “Dial M for Murder” will be performed July 11-29 at the theater, will discuss the play at a “Sunday Symposium.”
On select Mondays and Saturdays in July and August, tours of the historic theater’s premises will take place, led by Bruce Miller, the playhouse archivist.
The programs are planned as playhouse officials “reimagine” its role, with a focus on broadening offerings beyond traditional live-theater productions, as it strives to address serious financial challenges.
A fundraising campaign, “Reimagined: Save Your Playhouse,” was launched in June with the “immediate and necessary” goal of $2 million by July 30. To make a donation, click here.
- The Sunday Symposium, featuring Hatcher in conversation with Mark Lamos, the playhouse’s outgoing artistic director, will take place Sunday, July 16. The event will follow a matinee performance of “Dial M for Murder,” at approximately 5 o’clock. Tickets to the performance are not required; symposium attendees should plan to arrive about two hours after the 3 p.m. curtain time, according to playhouse officials.
Hatcher’s “Dial M for Murder” adaptation of the 1952 original, written by Frederick Knott, premiered last July in San Diego. The thriller is best known as filmed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1954.
Hatcher’swork at Westport Country Playhouse includes his adaptation of Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw” in 2007, and “Script in Hand” play-readings of “Scotland Road” in 2016, “Tuesdays with Morrie,” co-written with Mitch Albom, in 2018 and “Mrs. Mannerly” in 2021.
“Dial M for Murder” will be the final production directed by Lamos for the playhouse before he retires in January after 15 seasons.
- Guided tours of the theater will be offered, by reservation, from 10:30 a.m. to noon on the following Mondays and Saturdays: July 17, 22 and 24, and Aug. 5 and 7. To sign up, click here.
Tour leader Miller will recount the theater’s evolution from when its doors opened June 29, 1931, in what was once a cow barn, to the present day, featuring state-of-the-art technology.
The tours will include the theater’s backstage area, the green room, dressing rooms, scene shop, wardrobe room, posters, photos, costumes and set models.
Along the way, Miller also will offer anecdotes about notable playhouse productions and the performers who appeared in them.
Private group tours also can be scheduled by contacting Kelly Richards Mikolasy, house and events manager, by emailing krichards@westportplayhouse.org.
