WESTPORT — Pumpkins past their prime and jack o’ lanterns no longer jacked will be collected for composting at the Nov. 9 session of the Westport Farmers Market.

Dubbed the “Great Pumpkin Toss,” unwanted pumpkins and gourds can be dropped off during regular market hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at 50 Imperial Ave.

Action Waste Solutions will be on hand to accept pumpkins and gourds in their natural state, including “squishy and rotted pumpkins,” according to a publicity release. However, those that are decorated or painted pumpkins cannot be composted.

“Each year, 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins in the U.S. are wasted,” Nicola LaRiccia, co-founder of Action Waste Solutions, said in the statement. “What an easy way to reduce that waste by turning it into usable compost.
