WESTPORT — The driver of a car that crashed on Newtown Turnpike and burst into flames Thursday night escaped the wreck with help from a neighbor, according to the Fire Department.

The car struck a utility pole, which was snapped by the collision, and then burst into flames, according to a post on the Fire Department’s Facebook page.

A resident nearby the accident scene heard the crash, according to the post, and helped the driver out of the vehicle. Westport police and EMS personnel also were dispatched to the scene.

There was no other information immediately available about the incident.
