WESTPORT — Maybe there were piles of storm-soaked debris in the wake of Tropical Storm Ida to dispose of.

Maybe many Westporters took time on a sunny pre-holiday afternoon to make a dump run.

Or maybe it was a Labor Day vibe that prompted residents to clear away pandemic-era junk.

Whatever the reason, the town’s transfer station on Sherwood Island Connector was a hub of activity Friday afternoon — resulting in a tower of trash (see accompanying photos).

About 2 p.m. Friday, a transfer station employee told a resident the pile was caused by a backlog clearing out all the dropped-off rubbish.

Anyone with similar plans to hit the transfer station this weekend should be advised, however, it will be open only Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

The facility will be closed Sunday as usual, as well as Monday for Labor Day.
