WESTPORT — A novel about a Native teenager who witnesses a murder and becomes involved in an investigation into corruption is next year’s selection for the WestportREADS community reading project.

The book, “Firekeeper’s Daughter,” is a young adult work by Angeline Boulley, a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The novel, published in 2021, was a New York Times bestseller.

Boulley will appear at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Westport Library to deliver the keynote address for WestportREADS 2023. To register for the event, click here.

The “Firekeeper’s Daughter” will serve as the theme for a series of related programs and discussions in January and February under the umbrella of WestportREADS, an annual project of the Westport Library. For more details, click here.

The book can be borrowed from the library, as well as digital and audio copies.

In addition to the book’s critical and popular success, it is being adapted for a Netflix program by Higher Ground, the production company founded by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate Firekeeper’s Daughter as the 2023 WestportREADS selection and ecstatic to have her in the library to deliver this year’s keynote,” Westport Library Executive Director Bill Harmer said in a publicity release.

“Angeline is a master storyteller with a tale that will resonate throughout the Westport community and spark discussion and conversation in the way only a great book can,” he added.
