WESTPORT — “Into the Heart of Cuba,” chronicling the travels of documentary photographer Daryl Hawk in the Caribbean nation, will be presented at Tuesday’s meeting of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
The screening and lecture by Hawk is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East.
The program is open to the public. There is a $10 fee for AMC members and $15 for non-members.
Hawk, a former Westport resident who has made six trips to Cuba, was “one of the first Americans to travel alone without any restrictions and unlimited access to all areas,” according to a press statement for the program.
During his trips, Hawk said in the statement, “The visual stimulation that I experienced from dawn to dusk was truly exhilarating. I have never seen such a perfect combination of beautiful light, color and the friendliest and most welcoming people in all of my travels.”
Hawk said he will discuss his photographic style, philosophy and techniques. Equipment, lighting on location, environmental portraits and tips on planning a trip to Cuba will all be covered as well.
Hawk, who for three decades has photographed travels to remote and exotic locations, is a member of the Explorers Club, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and member of the Professional Photographers Association. He has appeared several times on NBC’s “Today Show” and Fox 5 television.
He also owns “Unconventional Travelers,” a tour company that “focuses on inspiring travelers to the world in a new way by experiencing first hand other cultures and lifestyles,” according to the publicity release.
