SOUTHPORT — The Pequot Library is debuting a new exhibition this week, highlighting artifacts from its Special Collections that explore the role maps and mapmaking played during the Revolutionary War.
The opening reception for Lines of Liberty: Maps, Power, and the Making of America will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8th. The event will feature sea shanties from The Jovial Crew, known for their regular performances at The Griswold Inn in Essex.
The exhibition draws on the Pequot Library’s collection of historic maps, atlases, and manuscripts and examines how maps were made and used from the colonial era through the 20th century, with a particular focus on the Revolutionary period. Rare maps and atlases are presented alongside letters and military records, giving a sense of how the war was experienced on the ground and inviting views to “consider maps not as neutral pictures of the world but as objects shaped by the knowledge, purposes, and values of the people who made and used them.”
The Pequot Library is planning several programs related to the exhibition, including behind-the-scenes tours of the library’s Special Collections and exhibition tours on the second Saturday of each month. For more information on Lines of Liberty, click here.
