WESTPORT–Jason Bird has been performing magic for more than a generation. The veteran of, by his estimate, more than 9,000 live performances, he is a master of his craft.
Between now and the end of December, Bird will be “in residence” at three Connecticut Delamar hotels–in Westport, Mystic and West Hartford–performing Parlor of Impossibilities.
The room, excuse me, parlor, at the Delamar is intimate, with a mere 60 seats. Every audience member–and Sunday’s 4 p.m. audience featured grade-school kids, martini-sipping moms and senior married couples–has a clear sight line to Bird.
Bird, elegantly dressed in a silver three-piece suit, is a clear story-teller and flawless performer. He performed more than a dozen stunning routines: mind reading, sleight-of-hand, and refined illusions. His props included an imaginary deck of cards, a jigsaw puzzle, a book detailing pi to the 50,000th decimal, a red handkerchief and a lotto ticket.
Bird exposed the trickery involved in the handkerchief routine, but that routine turned out to have a third layer of surprise.
During the post-show “meet and greet,” Bird distributed card decks to each audience member. He then instructed them to execute a few simple, mechanical manipulations to the cards in the deck, ending with an amazing reveal that stunned the guests.
