WESTPORT — Pitcher Chase Siegel allowed just one hit, struck out eight and walked one in a complete game effort as the Staples High baseball team blanked visiting Newtown 5-0 in Class LL State Tournament second-round action Wednesday.
No. 3 Staples had advanced with a 7-3 win over No. 30 Farmington, and No. 14 Newtown defeated No. 19 Ridgefield 5-4 in eight innings in first-round action the day before.
In the second-round victory, Jaron Kline delivered a two-run double in the first inning and provided a two-run single in the second. The Wreckers scored three times in the second inning.
“It was great — great feeling,” Kline said of his success at the plate.
The top of the order set things up for No 3 hitter Kline.
Luke Oakley led off the game with a single and scored.
Oakley had a pair of singles and stole a base.
No. 2 hitter Jack Farnen reached four times, including a single, stole a base and scored a pair of runs.
With the win, the Wreckers advance to the quarterfinals when No. 6 South Windsor visits at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Congrats to Staples and our neighbor Chase Siegel for an outstanding pitching effort.
