DANBURY — The Staples High football team, rolling to a 51-0 blowout over the Danbury Hatters on Friday night, improved to 6-1 on the season.

The Wreckers turned in a strong game in every respect.

The defense forced four turnovers and twice made Danbury turn the ball over on downs. Seniors Luke Goldman and Sammy Petrosino had interceptions. The defensive line had three sacks and was all over the Danbury quarterback throughout the night.

Staples QB Caleb Smith drove a balanced offense. He completed 20 of 32 pass attempts for 308 yards, tossed five touchdown passes and rushed 10 times for 42 yards.

Petrosino had two TD receptions and Nathan Smith, Shane Sandrew and Justin Halky also made TD catches.

Jarrett DeLuca and Anthony Armentano both rushed for TDs.

Max Maurillo booted a 30-yard field goal.

DeLuca carried the ball four times for 43 yards and Armentano ran the ball eight times for 62.

Josh Marcus completed a pass in his only attempt, good for six yards.

Nathan Smith caught 10 passes for 138 yards, Ryan Skolnick had four receptions for 55, Petrosino made three catches for 44 and Halky caught one for 46 yards.

The Wreckers are home at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, when Trumbull visits. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
