WESTPORT — The Staples High School boys basketball team defeated visiting Pomperaug of Southbury 61-38 Tuesday night.
By winning the opener in the Staples holiday tournament, the Wreckers’ season improved to 2-0. Staples at 5 p.m. Thursday will host Berlin, which defeated Immaculate in the other tourney game, for the championship.
Gavin Rothenberg scored 13 points and had six rebounds. Cody Sale also dropped in 13 points, and Chris Zajac had a double-double with 11 points and a dozen rebounds.

Staples is off for the remainder of the calendar year and resumes action on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Newtown.
The Wreckers will visit Ridgefield on Jan. 6 and return home Jan. 10 to host New Canaan — each of these games tips off at 7 p.m.
