WESTPORT — In most of the world, it’s football. In the U.S., it’s soccer.

By whatever name, the sprawling World Cup tournament taking place in Qatar is considered the globe’s most popular sporting event by far.

And now that mega-tourney is getting big play in Westport, as the Westport Library plans to present live broadcasts of games on its mega 18-by-10-foot screen in the Trefz Forum.

The broadcast schedule starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, featuring the U.S. team taking on the Netherlands in the opening round of the tournament’s knockout stage.

Subsequent broadcasts are planned:

  • Friday, Dec. 9: quarterfinal games at 10 a.m and 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 13: semifinal #1 at 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 14: semifinal #2 at 2 p.m.

Fans will be able to listen to the games’ audio via the Sennheiser mobile app, which connects to the forum’s audio signal.

To access the audio app, patrons should bring their own mobile devices to download the app, and headphones or earbuds to listen.

Instructions on how to connect to the Sennheiser mobile app will be available at the library, or on the library’s website by clicking here.
