WESTPORT — Staples boys basketball defeated visiting Ramapo High of Franklin Lakes, N.J. 58-46 on Tuesday night. The Wreckers made it 3-0, having beaten Wilby of Waterbury 68-26 on Dec. 16 and Archbishop Molloy High of Briarwood, N.Y. 65-47 at neutral site Crosby High of Waterbury on Dec. 21.
In the latest victory, over Ramapo, the Wreckers jumped out to a commanding 32-17 halftime lead and pulled ahead 50-25 after three quarters with Henry Veissid beating the buzzer with a putback. The play was set up by a Mason Tobias steal on the defensive end, one of numerous big defensive plays for the Wreckers.
“They guarded tonight. I thought their defense was awesome,” Staples Coach David Goldshore said. “We’re predicated on our defense.”

The Wrecker coach noted that the offense will only get better and continue to have opportunities to score if the defense continues to do its things.
The Wreckers used 16 players and nine registered points in the win.
“It’s a family. We’re trying to get as many people as possible an opportunity to feel they’re a part of this,” Goldshore said.
Mason Tobias scored 16 points and Sam Clachko dropped in 14 to lead the offense. Austin Heyer, Matty Corrigan and Dhilan Lowman each chipped in with six. Lohman and Clachko both hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Jared Sale, Ryan Marcus and Jack Jacob all had baskets.
The out-of-state matchup was a good one to challenge the Wreckers before they get into FCIAC play. Goldshore noted that Ramapo has won a pair of state championships in recent years.
In the win over Archbishop Molloy, Lowman had 21 points and seven rebounds; Tobias scored 19 to go along with 13 rebounds; Clachko had 10 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds; and Heyer scored 10 Lowman and Clachko both had a pair of steals.
Up next for the Wreckers is a visit to Stamford Saturday at 1 p.m.
