WESTPORT — A solid season came to a disappointing end for the Staples girls soccer team in a 1-0 loss to visiting Newington in Class LL State Tournament action Monday.

No. 6 Staples, coming off a 4-0 win over No. 27 Norwich Free Academy in the first round last Friday, saw No. 11 Newington move on in the second round.

Newington will face No. 3 Amity of Woodbridge in the quarterfinals on Nov. 7 at a time to be determined.

The Wreckers had lost just once in the regular season before falling Oct. 25 in the FCIAC tournament semifinals. — Andy Hutchison
