NEW CANAAN–Staples girls tennis, the No. 2 seed, fell to top-seeded Greenwich 4-0 in the FCIAC Tournament Championship match at neutral site New Canaan High on Tuesday.

Despite the title-match outcome, it was a very hard-fought match. Adrianna Gavriloiu (third singles) had won her first set 7-5 and was leading 1-0 in the second when play was halted due to Greenwich sealing the team victory.

Dylan Lehrer and Emme Steinberg in (third doubles) had lost the first set 6-4 but was winning early in the second when the match was stopped.

“I am incredibly proud of how our team competed throughout the FCIAC tournament. We faced some tough challenges, but the players showed true resilience and played with a level of focus that makes me confident heading into the State tournament,” Staples Coach Jennifer Wider said.

The Class LL Team State Tournament begins May 29 and 30 with the individual tourney slated to start Sunday, June 7. Just like in the FCIAC standings, Greenwich and Staples are the top two seeds.

“We are seeded second in the state and will hopefully have a chance to face Greenwich again,” the coach added.

The Wreckers are led by Olivia Lazar at first singles, followed by Amelia Berkowitz, Gavriloiu and Kat Siegner. In addition to the third doubles tandems are the No. 1 team of Rachel Guzman and Azita Vazhayil, along with the No. 2 duo of Isabel Alfageme and Aanya Gandhi.
