WESTPORT — With light rain falling throughout the game, players on both sides slipped and slid through a tough battle. Under consistent pressure, Staples’ stellar defense came down to earth in their season’s second loss.

Warde jumped ahead early with a goal scored two minutes into the game.

The balance of the first half featured a Wreckers offense that was unable to connect in enemy territory. Goalkeeper Cami Kolek again made several terrific saves; Sami DeWitt batted away a shot on goal at 28 minutes in.

Staples had a chance to even the score with five minutes left in the half. Hailey Roraback drew a foul. Katharine Shackelford took the foul kick, which was deflected back to the corner where Shackelford took a shot but did not score.
