WESTPORT–Jonny Costello’s first-ever varsity goal in the eighth minute staked Staples to a 1-0 lead over Bridgeport Central at Wakeman Field yesterday.

The Hilltoppers hung in, but the Wreckers broke the match open with three goals in the final minute. Matt Shackelford pounced on a rebound of Avery Mueller’s strike; Luca Escalarte picked up a loose ball and finished for his first varsity tally, and then Josh Deitch assisted on Shackelford’s second goal, for the 4-0 win.

The win raises Staples’ record to 5-5-1. They’re in action again tomorrow at 4 p.m., against St. Joseph at Wakeman Field.
