The Staples High girls’ soccer team twice used strong second-half play to overcome two challenging FCIAC foes this week. They remain unbeaten heading into the regular season’s stretch run.

Coach Barry Beattie’s team defeated visiting Trumbull 1-0 in a hard-fought game on Oct. 7. The Eagles had the better of the play out of the gate but the Wreckers began to turn things around late in the opening half and created two good chances. The solid play carried over into second half but things remained scoreless until Annabel Edwards was assisted by Neva Mermegan with about nine minutes remaining.

Staples traveled to Stamford for an Oct. 11 clash and overcame an early 1-0 deficit to prevail 4-1. All of the Staples goals came after the halftime break. Parker Pretty, Evelyn Chudowsky, Mermegan, and Edwards all hit the back of the net in the victory.

The Wreckers carry an overall record of 7-0-3 into their final five games. Staples is scheduled to visit Bridgeport Central today at 4:00 p.m.
