WESTPORT — Staples boys soccer team passed a tough test Tuesday at Wakeman Field.
The Wreckers looked strong on both sides of the ball. They absorbed Norwalk’s pressure, added plenty of their own, poured in three goals, and rode stout defense to their third straight victory of the young season, 3-0, over the visitors.
In the 33rd minute, Luca Escalarte stole a ball near the center circle. He found Avery Mueller, who cruised in on the keeper and finished cleanly to the far post.
The visitors had chances of their own, notably banging a shot off the crossbar, then watching a long wind-aided shot hit the underside of the bar and carom down before being cleared authoritatively.
Keeper Nick Sikorski saved a couple of long balls well.
Staples doubled their lead in the 54th minute. Lucas Carpi found Elliot Galin, who turned the corner and fed Zach Gorin for a well-timed tap-in.
The Wreckers’ defense of Santi Alfageme, Zach Beebe, Jack Schwartz and Gabe Hellman kept the clean sheet, under their strongest pressure of the fall.
Mueller delivered the coup de grace with just 16 seconds remaining, assisted by Escalarte.
Staples — now 3-0-0 — is in action again Thursday against Stamford at Wakeman Field. Kickoff is 4 p.m. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
