The Staples High field hockey and girls soccer teams, on Friday, both saw their FCIAC championship hopes dashed after impressive runs to the pinnacle round.

In field hockey action, No. 2 Staples was blanked by top seed Darien 3-0 at neutral site Wilton High.

On the soccer pitch, No. 2 Staples fell 2-1 to top seed St. Joseph’s of Trumbull in New Canaan. Evelyn Chudowsky had the lone Staples goal.

The field hockey team gets back at it in the Class L State Tournament’s first round when the No. 2 Wreckers host No. 15 Hamden at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8. Darien is the top seed.

The girls soccer team is the No. 3 seed in Class LL and will have a first-round bye, then host No. 14 Brien McMahon or No. 19 Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at either 2 or 4 p.m. St. Joe’s is the LL bracket’s No. 2 seed.
