WESTPORT — When Avery Mueller outleapt taller defenders and scored 45 seconds into Tuesday’s boys soccer match against Ridgefield at Wakeman Field, it looked like the rout was on.
It would be the second time this year. Opening day earlier this month saw Staples roar to a 2-0 lead against the same visitors. But lightning ended the game before the first half ended, negating the score and forcing a replay from the start.
The Tigers have been on a roll since that opening day “non-loss,” reeling off a 3-1-1 record. The Wreckers came in 3-0-1.
Mueller’s goal was a gorgeous one. It came off Zach Gorin’s corner kick, with the co-captain authoritatively driving a header into the back of the net.
After an even first half, Ridgefield dominated the second with crisp, creative passing and a few field-opening long balls.
Staples keeper Nick Sikorski was well positioned and sure-handed, and was aided by the staunch defense of Santi Alfageme, Jack Schwartz, Adam Syah, Zach Beebe and Gabe Hellman.
The Wreckers certainly had their moments. And they paid off just 1:12 from the end of the match, when Elliot Galin fed Emmett Nivaud. His quick, hard and low shot slammed into the far corner.
It was a different game than two and a half weeks ago. But the result was the same. And it set the Wreckers up well for Thursday’s big contest against Greenwich. The 6-0-0 Cardinals come to Wakeman Field for a 4 p.m. kickoff. (Game schedules are subject to change; click for the latest CIAC updates.)
