Every week, “affordable houses” like these are torn down and multi-million dollar homes replace them. Though this process is perfectly legal and makes the developer a huge profit, Westport loses homes that could count toward its “affordable goals.” Why doesn’t the town figure out a way to purchase these properties and make use of them, perhaps in coordination with organizations like Homes with Hope? These houses currently exist comfortably in the neighborhoods they occupy and these purchases would allow for the housing diversity we claim to be seeking. It’s crazy to see these houses sent to the landfill, expensive homes replacing them, all while we are forced to endure other developers who, through 8-30 (g) can break our zoning regs to provide a few affordable units mixed into their massive, for profit projects.
