WESTPORT — An SUV careened off a local stretch of Interstate 95 on Sunday, smashing into a sound barrier and sending an occupant to the hospital.

The crash took place between southbound Exits 17 and 16 of the highway, according to a post on the Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Photos taken by firefighters dispatched to the scene show the SUV, after leaving the road, plowed into a wooden sound barrier. The impact shattered the structure.

One occupant of the vehicle was transported to a hospital, but details about the injuries were not immediately available.
