WESTPORT–A Stamford man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a wallet, credit cards and other documents from an unlocked car in Westport and using them on a spending spree in the Danbury area.

Westport Police arrested Mohammed Islam, 31, at Superior Court in Stamford on Dec. 17. A second suspect wanted in connection with the investigation has not been arrested. 

The theft was reported July 7, 2023, at the Birchwood Country Club, 75 Kings Highway South, Westport. 

“Multiple fraudulent credit card charges were subsequently made using the victim’s cards at various locations in the Danbury, Connecticut area,”  Westport police said in a statement. “Surveillance video of these transactions depicted two suspects. Through an extensive investigation that included information sharing with other law enforcement agencies, Mohammed Islam was identified as a suspect in this incident.”

Islam was charged with third-degree larceny, fourth-degree larceny, payment card theft, five counts of payments of less than $500 on a revoked or stolen credit card, conspiracy to commit payment of less than $500 on a revoked or stolen credit card, 12 counts of third-degree identity theft and criminal impersonation.

He is being held on $50,000 bond and is due in Superior Court in Stamford on Jan. 9, 2026.
