WESTPORT — A 51-year-old woman was arrested this week after police said she found a lost money order, cashed it and refused to reimburse its rightful owner.

Valentina Dimitia-Coatanroch, of Stratford, was charged Jan. 21 with fifth-degree larceny in connection with the incident.

Police in March 2020 received a complaint that a MoneyGram for $550 was lost and subsequently cashed by someone other than the person who had purchased it.

The complainant realized the lost MoneyGram was cashed fraudulently after asking the company for a replacement and being told it already had been cashed, according to the report.

The officer investigating the complaint determined that Dimitia-Coatanroch had found the MoneyGram on the ground, endorsed it and deposited it in her bank account, police said.

Dimitia-Coatanroch initially was given the opportunity to reimburse the MoneyGram purchaser, but according to the report, she refused.

A warrant for her arrest was issued and she was taken into custody Sunday by Stratford police. Westport police transported her to Police Department headquarters, where she was formally charged.

Dimitia-Coatanroch was released after posting $1,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 6 at state Superior Court in Westport.
