If you choose to drive through downtown Westport, police ask that you please be patient and alert to the increased pedestrian traffic.

I understand, and respect everyones right to protest. Why are Westport Democrats NOT protesting the HB-5002 bill approved by our democratic majority legislature? Where is the “call out” on State Senator Ceci Maher and State Representative Dominique Johnson who both voted IN FAVOR of this bill giving “STATE CONTROL” over our local zoning laws?
No, I am not a Trumpy. I am a taxpaying CT and Westport resident just like all my democratic friends and neighbors. Thank you to our 136 District Representative Jonathan Steinberg for voting AGAINST this bill, as it is flawed, and full of holes.
In Westport, we work together, not politically against each other when it comes to affordable housing. We are making great strides in creating more affordable housing. Yet legislatures like Ceci Maher and Dominique Johnson simply look the other way when we look for help from the state for affordable housing credits not given for pre- 8-30g law like Hales Court and Trailer park.
Ceci and Dominique are both nice people, but nice is not what we need when it comes to representing our district. We need moderate Democrats. Republicans, and Independents in Hartford like Jonathan Steinberg who will fight for not only citizen rights, but will fight Hartford and the crazy far left, vote for common sense legislation that makes sense when it comes to affordable housing.
Wishing all a great protest on Saturday, but asking all Democrats to thank Ceci and Dominque for their services and nominate candidates that will represent our district, and understand that “one size” does not fit all when it comes to affordable housing.
Please, anyone feel free to contact me if you are unfamiliar with HB-5002 and what this bill will mean for Westport if Governor Lamont signs it as.
While I oppose the bill and tell anyone who asks, hijacking the this thread is lame. (I’ve seen plenty of people – of both parties – calling out those two our two representatives who supported it.) Given your passion on the matter, maybe you should organize a protest over HB-5002?
(I agree with your proposed solution – even if one of the negatives is that it will result in older, substandard housing becoming what is “affordable.” Of course, the current 8-30g law is a gift to developers. The irony being that the preponderance of developers seem to support the Republican Party, Home Builders PACs contributing to Republicans at a 4-to-1 margin, over Democrats. https://www.opensecrets.org/political-action-committees-pacs/industry-detail/C02/2024)
Totally agree with Chris. A lame attempt to hijack this story.
It’s a democracy if you can keep it. Right now our commander and chief has deployed troops to THE USA!
This is outrageous, not only for the citizens who are protesting, but it is grossly unfair to ask our troops to turn their weapons on their fellow citizens.
A member of my extended family, a proud member of the CA National Guard, was deployed Saturday to the ICE Detention Center. He was spat at and called horrendous names, including by some “celebrities.” All of these military deployments are meant to incite. Do not fall for it. “Do not touch the bricks.”
There will be No Kings. No white flags. Get out there peacefully and forcefully. Stop the treason. Honor the US Constitution. Stand in peace, but stand nonetheless.
And for gosh sakes, Jimmy, enable more housing for the underserved. You have and continue to pave the way for many a development with multi million dollar housing. (Read:Hamlet). This is why the state stepped in. The average home price in Westport is $2 million; the average property tax bill is nearly $30,000. We keep building more and more unattainable housing, and raising our taxes to the sky with the likes of $129 million elementary schools.
I don’t like the new housing bill anymore than you do, but we probably deserve it.
Are the protests going to be spontaneous? Seems organized. I winder who is paying?
