FAIRFIELD — Down 9-5 with less than five minutes to play in the Class LL State Tournament semifinals at Fairfield University on Tuesday the Staples boys lacrosse team was staring season-ending defeat in the face.

The No. 3 Wreckers proceeded to reel off five goals in the final 4:49 of regulation to shock No. 2 Ridgefield 10-9. Tristan Schaefer netted the tie-breaking goal with just 2.4 seconds remaining.

Staples will take on No. 4 Darien in the state final on Saturday, set for 12:30 p.m. at Fairfield University. 

In their semifinal win the Wreckers got three goals from Schaefer, three along with four assists from Adam Udell and a goal and three assists off the stick of Justin Halky. Charlie Clark had a goal and an assist and Will Fleming and Hunter Pallai each scored. Goaltender Josh Marcus made 11 saves.
