WESTPORT — A music teacher at Coleytown Elementary School has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after video surveillance recorded him strike another vehicle in the school lot, police said.
James Andrews, 64, of Westport, has been charged with evading responsibility in connection with the incident last Nov. 28.
Police received a complaint Nov. 29 from a person who reported their car was damaged while parked in the Easton Road elementary school’s lot the previous day.
The complainant told police that after parking the car and heading to work at the school, the sound of an apparent crash was heard. When the complainant returned to the car later in the day, the vehicle had been damaged in the interim.
The incident was reported both to school staff and police.
Police investigating the accident, using footage recorded by a school surveillance camera, said the recording showed: “James Andrews pulls into the parking lot, attempts to park, and strikes the other vehicle. Mr. Andrews exits his vehicle, inspects the damage, and then goes to work without notifying anyone about the incident,” according to the report.
An arrest warrant was issued for Andrews, and he turned himself in Jan. 4 at Police Department headquarters to be formally charged. (A booking photo was not available, police said, because of a technical issue with the department’s camera that day.)
Andrews was released on a promise to appear Jan. 25 at state Superior Court in Stamford.
