WESTPORT — An armed 35-year-old man, who allegedly assaulted a person in a car on the Sherwood Island Connector early Tuesday, was captured trying to flee the scene in a car driven by a food-delivery driver, police said.
Antonio Trusty, of Waterbury, was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree unlawful restraint, criminal possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, interfering with an emergency call, sale of a narcotic substance, possession of more than 1.5 ounces of cannabis and sixth-degree larceny.
Police were dispatched to investigate what was described as a “domestic violence” incident after receiving a call about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday from a person reporting an assault by a boyfriend on the Sherwood Island Connector.
After locating the caller’s car, officers were told the suspect — identified as Trusty — had committed assault, and then prevented them from leaving the vehicle and initially blocked them from making an emergency phone call, according to the report.
Trusty left the scene on foot, police said, with two bags later found to contain a handgun, narcotics and several unopened gift cards.
He then was picked up by a self-described “Door Dash driver,” who police said agreed to drive Trusty from the area. The car was spotted by police and stopped as it traveled the wrong way onto the Interstate 95 northbound entrance ramp.
Trusty, found in the back of the vehicle, was taken into custody and charged after the bags with the gun and drugs were determined to be his, police said.
He was held on $100,000 bond and transported for arraignment later that day for arraignment at state Superior Court in Stamford.
