WESTPORT — Three juveniles fleeing from an armed robbery in Trumbull were apprehended Sunday evening after a chase through town that ended when the suspects crashed into another car, injuring its driver.

Westport police were alerted about 5 p.m. Sunday to be on the lookout for a black Infiniti sedan with three male suspects allegedly involved in a Trumbull heist where “a firearm was reported to have been displayed,” according to the report.

After eluding a Trumbull police chase, the suspects were last seen heading south on Interstate 95, near Exit 23.

A short time later, the vehicle was spotted by a Westport officer traveling west on Greens Farms Road, heading toward Bridge Street.

Officers set out  “stop sticks” on Bridge Street, but the suspects drove through the area, ignoring officers’ signals to halt. They headed to Saugatuck Avenue, where officers broke off pursuit given the potential dangers to others because of the suspects’ reckless driving.

The juveniles continued fleeing via Saugatuck Avenue, at points traveling south in the northbound lane, police said.

The Infiniti was rendered inoperative after crashing into another car at the intersection of Saugatuck and Duck Pond roads. The driver of the second vehicle suffered what police said were minor injuries and was taken to Norwalk Hospital for treatment.

The three suspects fled the accident scene on foot, but two were “quickly” captured when police, assisted by State Police troopers and Norwalk officers, set up a perimeter around the crash site, according to the report.

The last juvenile was apprehended a short time later, police said.

Saugatuck Avenue was closed while police investigated the crash. Acting on an eyewitness tip that the suspects discarded items from the Infiniti as they fled, officers searching the area found a firearm believed to be the suspects’.

The three juveniles — whose identities were not released because of their age — were turned over to Trumbull police custody to face charges in connection with the alleged robbery.

The driver of the Infiniti was charged by Westport police with failure to drive to the right, reckless driving and engaging police in pursuit.
