WESTPORT — A chimney fire at a Hitchcock Road home was quickly extinguished by firefighters Sunday night, but it’s a timely reminder to make sure chimneys are inspected and cleaned annually, fire officials said.

Fire crews dispatched to the home could see flames leaping from the chimney, and smoke was beginning to fill the building, according to a report on the Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames to the chimney and douse the blaze before it spread to the structure.

“Residents are urged to have their chimneys professionally cleaned and inspected each year by a licensed chimney service to reduce fire risk,” fire officials said in the posting.
