Arthur Munson Hunter Jr., of Westport, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, after a brief illness.
Arthur (Art), the son of the late Dr. Arthur Munson Hunter and Sally Hunter, was born Jan. 9, 1927, in Westport. He was a 1945 graduate of Staples High School. Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Art was a World War II veteran. With his tour of military duty complete, Art enrolled at the University of Connecticut.
After his studies at UConn, he joined the Hunter Real Estate Agency, a firm founded by his mother Sally and the first real estate agency to be established in Westport.
Over his professional career, Art served as the president of the Westport Board of Realtors and grew the Hunter Agency, expanding from just real estate to include insurance offerings. In the early 1980s, Art sold the agency and joined the staff at Arrow Curriers staying there until his retirement.
On June 12, 1948, Art married Marjorie (Marj) Salembier of Westport. Art and Marj greeted one son and five daughters. Raising their family at 44 Kings Highway brought many gatherings of friends and relatives. There was never a dull moment in the Hunter household.
Art was blessed with a big personality that was coupled with a friendly demeanor. It was easy to see why he had so many good friends; if you knew Art you liked Art. But throughout his life most important to him was a never-ending love for family and community.
Even as he grew older Art most looked forward to receiving frequent updates on the lives of his children, grandchildren and even the great-grandchildren.
And as a lifelong resident of Westport, he was a strong supporter of the Staples athletic teams, and enjoyed many years of Sunday rounds of golf at the Longshore golf course … Art was a true Westport “Townie.”
A big change in Art’s life occurred when he remarried to Louise Balsano on June 9, 1983. Over their 41 years together Louise became his loving wife, best friend and confidant. Together, they enjoyed traveling, making numerous trips to their favorite locations in Newport, R.I., and Cape Cod.
Art is survived by his loving wife Louise Balsano Hunter of Westport; his son Arthur Hunter III and wife (Linda) of Lewes, Del., daughters Wendy Widmann and husband (Armin) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Sally Willard Uccellini of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Stacy Hunter and husband (Rick Holstein) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Dana Harrity and husband (Peter) of North Hampton, N.H., and Liz Koscinski and husband (Scott) of Monroe; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
