WESTPORT — Five people were hospitalized in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 here early Saturday, when a car traveling north careened over the highway barrier and smashed into a car heading south.

The accident was reported bewteen I-95’s exits 16 and 17 shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday, according to the report by Assistant Fire Chief Brian Meadows.

Engines 4 and 2, Rescue 3 and the shift commander initially were dispatched to the scene, later joined by Engine 5.

A vehicle traveling north on the local stretch of I-95 apparently went out of control, surmounted the highway’s concrete divider and catapulted into the southbound lanes, striking another car.

The crash caused “heavy damage” to both vehicles, according to the report, with multiple injuries to people in both cars.

Westport EMS, assisted by EMS crews from New Canaan and Darien, transported five people from the scene to hospitals for treatment of injuries.

The severity of their injuries was not immediately available.

Two lanes of the interstate were closed during emergency operations.

The last fire units cleared the scene shortly after 6:30 a.m., according to the report.
