WESTPORT — Want to investigate what it takes to become a Westport police officer? Gain first-hand insights into training, a range of criminal investigation techniques and crime-prevention methods?
A Citizens Police Academy, offered by the Police Department, promises to provide answers to those questions and more.
A new academy will be convened for eight sessions beginning Sept. 19. Participants also will have a chance to join a “ride-along” with an officer from the patrol division, take “Stop the Bleed” training and, as an option, learn how to handle weapons safely. (A syllabus of possible classes is attached at the end of this article.)
Classes will take place weekly at 7 p.m. Thursdays (with one Tuesday session) through Nov. 14.
The program is open to Westport residents 21 years old and over.
Applications are available at Police Department headquarters, 50 Jesup Road, and also attached at the end of this article.
Completed applications — which must be submitted by Aug. 27 — can be returned at headquarters or emailed to police Lt. Jillian Cabana at jcabana@westportct.gov.
