Theresa Zapata, affectionately known as “Terry” and “Nana,” passed away on Jan. 5, 2024, following a brave battle with serious medical issues. 

Born in the heart of New York City on Oct. 6, 1941, Terry’s vibrant spirit and unforgettable presence touched the lives of all who knew her. As a resident of Westport for the past 25 years, Terry brought her unique warmth to the community.

Terry was a force of nature, a true spitfire who captivated those around her with a unique blend of sarcasm and unfiltered honesty. Her sharp wit and infectious laughter brought joy to countless hearts, leaving a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to be part of her life.

Family was at the core of Terry’s world, and she was cherished by her children: Debbie (Charlie), Michael (Doreen), Barbara (Robert) and Lynn (Paul). Her role as Nana extended to her beloved grandchildren: Dillon, Michael (Megan), Bobby, Lindsey (Eddie), Mathew, Ian, Paul and Trevor. Her great-grandson, Killian, brought an additional layer of joy to her life.

Terry was an excellent cook who delighted in preparing dinners for her extended family. Nana’s meatballs, a culinary masterpiece, were loved by all and they will remain a cherished tradition during family gatherings.

Terry took immense joy in being a devoted spectator at her grandchildren’s sporting events and an enthusiastic audience member at their school performances. Her support and cheering echoed the boundless love she held for her family.

An unwavering love for animals, particularly dogs and cats, earned Terry the affectionate title of “the dog lady” in her Bronx community while raising her family. Known for her compassionate heart, she opened her home to countless strays, providing them with love and care. Her legacy of kindness toward furry friends is a testament to her nurturing and selfless nature.

Terry’s dedication extended beyond her family, as she devoted over 12 years of service to the Westport Parks and Recreation guest services. Her commitment and warm demeanor left an indelible mark on the community she served.

A memorial service for Terry will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Luke Church in Westport. The service will be followed by a celebration of life, location details to follow. We invite family and friends to gather to share stories and reminisce about Terry. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Humane Society, reflecting Terry’s passion for animals and her desire to make a positive impact in the world.

As we bid farewell to Terry, let us remember her with smiles and laughter, celebrating a life well-lived and a heart that overflowed with love. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the warmth of the memories she created and the love she shared.
