________________________________

Mary Becker (née Glassberg), 95, of Westport, died at home on Nov. 20, 2024. A devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and friend to all, Mary touched countless lives with her warmth and boundless energy.

Born on March 10, 1929, in New York City to Philip and Sarah Kaufman Glassberg, Mary grew up in Manhattan.

After attending Sarah Lawrence College, she met her future husband, Lester Becker, at a resort hotel in the Catskills. They married on Dec. 23, 1951, and in 1963 moved to Westport. After raising their two children, Ann and Michael, Mary turned her passion for global travel into a career, working as a travel agent for many years.

A woman of many interests and talents, Mary was an avid and skilled knitter, creating beautiful works and gifts that were treasured by family and friends alike. She also had a deep love for her garden, and for music, theater and reading, all of which brought her great joy.

Through the years, she also doted on a long line of dogs and cats, the last of which, Archie, stayed curled up on her bed through her final days.

Above all, though, Mary’s greatest love was for her family. She was deeply involved in her children’s lives, and her presence was a constant source of support, guidance and love throughout their upbringing. She was well known and well loved by the many classmates and friends who came through their home over the years, and she maintained close relationships with many of them throughout her life.

She is survived by her beloved husband of almost 73 years, Lester Becker; her daughter, Ann Moore, of New York City, and her son, Michael Becker, and his wife, Christine, of Los Angeles, as well as her sister, Eve Lubin, also of Los Angeles. But Mary’s pride and joy was her grandson, Ellis Becker, who lives in Madison, Wisc. Her legacy of love, kindness and generosity will live on in all of them.

Mary’s life was marked by courage and compassion, and in both life and death, she faced each moment with grace and supreme bravery. Her infectious energy, positivity and joy were an inspiration to all who knew her.

A gathering for family and friends will be held at a later date, to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary’s honor to either the Westport Country Playhouse or the Pet Animal Welfare Society.
