WESTPORT — Dogs in space.

In Westport, while canines themselves are not being catapulted into the ether, the town has launched a process to obtain dog licenses via cyberspace.

This month, as dog owners are required to renew licenses for their pets for the period covering July 1 to June 30, 2023, an online option to apply is now available.

Once registered in the online services portal on the town’s website, applicants can apply for a dog’s license and make a payment using credit or debit cards, or E-check, according to the announcement from Town Clerk Jeffrey Dunkerton.

Dog-licensing requirements and fees include:

  • All dogs more than six months must be licensed.
  • Licenses cost $8 for neutered male or spayed female animals, and $19 for those that are not. (Additional fees apply for online applications.)
  • To obtain a license, the dog must have up-to-date rabies immunization. An owner must present a copy of the pet’s rabies certificate to obtain a license.
  • There is a $1 penalty per month for renewal licenses issued after June 30.
  • A $75 infraction will be issued for any unlicensed dog and for any dog not wearing a current dog tag attached to a collar around its neck or body.

Applications for a new or renewed dog license also can be filed by mail or in person at the Town Clerk’s Office in Town Hall.

To file an application by mail, download the form and, accompanied by a check, send it to:  Westport Town Clerk, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.
