WESTPORT — A Bridgeport man, arrested in April for stealing checks from a local conservatorship and depositing the funds into his bank account, this week faces new charges in a similar case that police say was perpetrated against a neighbor of the first victim.
Eldrege Christmas, 37, in the latest case was charged June 6 with first-degree forgery, second-degree larceny, three counts of third-degree identity theft, four counts of trafficking in personal identifying information and three counts of illegal possession of a personal identifying information device.
The charges stem from a complaint filed with police last July 13. At that time, a woman told police that someone tried to make illegal electronic transfers from her bank account and that two checks had been fraudulently written against the account.
The woman’s neighbor had filed a similar complaint a month earlier, police said. The investigation into that case led to charges of first-degree larceny, first-degree identity theft, first-degree forgery and more being filed against Christmas two months ago.
The police detective investigating both cases, after securing a warrant to search Christmas’s phone, found evidence linking him to the July complaint, according to the police report. In addition, the detective found “personal identifying information” for several other people on the phone, police said.
Based on those findings, police were granted three separate warrants to arrest Christmas, resulting in multiple criminal counts.
After his arrest this week on the new charges, Christmas was held on $375,000 bond and the next day was transported for arraignment at state Superior Court in Stamford.
