WESTPORT — A longtime town resident and volunteer for numerous community causes has been appointed to fill a vacant seat in District 8 of the Representative Town Meeting.

Julie Whamond, of Elliot Lane, was named March 14 to fill an unexpired term on the legislative body caused by the recent resignation of Lisa Newman.

The three other District 8 members voted unanimously to appoint Whamond to the open seat after interviewing seven people who had expressed interest in the position. The term expires Nov. 21 after this year’s municipal election.

Whamond attended Westport public schools and graduated from Staples High School in 1984, and four years later earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from Gettysburg College, according to her resume.

Her career in business spans management of Applewoods retail outlets in Westport and Greenwich in the 1990s to director of parish administration at Christ & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church from 2014-19.

Whamond has a long and varied history of volunteerism with a range of Westport community groups, including leadership roles with the PTAs at Coleytown Middle and Staples High schools, the Westport Young Woman’s League, Westport Girl Scouts, Project Return, Staples Tuition Grants and the Downtown Merchants Association.
